5:40 pm

2014 is pretty much the same for me. I realised alot of things I haven't achieve for this year's (2014) resolution. Let's take a look at the resolutions.
- To have that solid 6 pecs that I've been wanting since army days.

Something that I still didn't achieve. Somehow it got from bad to worse. I really need to do something about it. At least I've started my gym routines and running are kept consistent. If I didnt run outside, I'll cover up by running on the threadmill.

- To do hiking/climb a mountain (eg. Kota Kinabalu)

Another resolution that I missed. Sorry Azmil. Wanted to do this together with you and Ramizah's entourage but during that point of time I'm not financially stable yet. So I got to forgo this. Probably for a start, I'll hike Bukit Timah Hill?

- Marathons at least once every 2 months. If possible once a month.

Technically, this is fine. Almost once every month, so it's still not that bad.

- To run a full marathon

Yes. This is finally achieved. Managed to run Sundown Full Marathon. Quite an experience for me because I didn't really train for it or ramping up my runs. I just go for the run hoping that I can pull it off. And yes. I did. I cleared with in less than 6 hours. 5 minutes to 6 hours and for a first time, its actually impressive. However, I'm limping the following day.

-Be that workaholic man

So far so good. Work has been crazy for the past year and trying to change my body clock for work is also a challenge. Been trying to force myself to sleep by 10.30pm for the past month and it worked. Kinda.

3Q2014, marine grades was quite a demand and I have been staying back almost every day during that period. 2 barges a day or up to 20 trucks per day is really tiring.

So far, I'm getting use to bulk loading. Part of the operation. I heard there will be some staff movements soon, grease and synthetic plant opening. So let's see.

- Lesser music commitments**

Yes. you see. Double star. That means I need to be more strict with this. I stopped music for about 3 months or so and was told to come back. Sian. Players needed. How I wish I am not needed.

- Grade 5 Theory & Violin Grade 5

Yes. I've already registered for the grade 5 theory. The paper will be in March. Wish me luck! :)

Instead of Grade 5 Violin, I'm planning to take Grade 7 Viola and will ask Luo Biao to teach me. I need his guidance!

- Holiday at least 2x a year! (a must - kinda planned)

Yes. Being in a stable job, travelling is kind of easy or managable for me. Thank god. However leaves issue is a probably. But trying to minimise using my leave as much possible and make use of public holidays to go overseas

- Restart on my savings

Saving's been fine. Have been continuimg my savings for future use. Definitely not holidays or shopping but in time when I need it badly.

-To be in a long-lasting relationship

Unaccomplished. Period.

7:08 pm

Had a heart to heart talk with my mum yesterday before heading out for practice. Shared with her the experience in Hong Kong - how cold the weather, the people, how busy the place is, how we converse in Cantonese, showed her the pictures in my phone.

We then move on to topic on my career. How she said I'm lucky to have this job with a stable income, you can travel around the world, good bonuses, how I should start on my savings, how long she forsee me working in this company.

Finally, we moved on to marriage life. But before she continue further, I told her,

"Ma, On this very evening, I just wanna tell you something, that in the future, I don't want to get married. Don't expect me to be up on that pelamin, don't expect a kid from me. I just want to lead a simple life, no marriage, no kids, just me, travelling, doing my runs & music. That's all."

"But why? I want to hold my grandchildren in my arms.."

"You already have them.."

"But not from you. I want it when people ask 'Eh ni Anak siapa? Anak Ridwan? Eh eh dah besar..'"

"No ma. I just can't. Don't force me to. I'm sorry. I can't even manage myself, you want me to have a family on my own."

"That is why I want you to have a wife to manage you and me when I'm getting old later.."

"No ma. I can do that on my own. I dont need a third party. I can take care of you."

She seems disappointed. I can sense her disappointment from her voice. But I'm sorry ma. I just can't forsee myself getting married. I'm happy this way. So please, respect my decision like how I respect you as an elderly, as my guardian, as my mother.

In the future, when both my parents or guardians not around anymore, InsyaAllah, I want to migrate out of Singapore. I love being alone. Its just me.

With love,
Syed Ridwan

4:41 pm

Left to right: Tien Hun, Mei, Yun Fen, Xiang Hong, Samantha, Janelle and Me!

DAY 1:
Departed Singapore at 7.35am, my flight to Hongkong with Singapore Airlines is really a nice experience. The staffs were wonderful and super friendly. The way they greeted the passengers, you can feel their warmth. I guess that is why Singapore Airlines is one of the best, (nonsense - probably the best) airlines Singapore has to offer.

Second time to Hong Kong in the same year. Not alone, however, with a group of friends - BHSO committee member (not all though).

Once touched down at Hong Kong International Airport, the captain briefed us about the current weather at that point of time. I was quite amazed because he announced that it was 15*C and it doesn't feel like 15*C at all. What's worse, one of my friends took off her jacket because she say it's hot. I reckoned probably we're indoors. That's why we don't really feel it.

Once we stepped out from the station, we felt the strong wind blowing. Everyone started wearing their jacket. Looked for this restaurant where one of us have reserved. Food ordered ranging from Chicken and Beef fried noodle, Roasted Chicken Wing and this huge ass soufflè. Shared among the 7 of us.

Took the MTR to our apartment and we realised that the apartment is actually very very spacious and clean. 3 bedrooms all for the girls. And we guys (being gentlemen) sleep on an airbed at the living room. Plus point, we have a huge television and a playstation set all to ourself. So not so bad afterall.

Our apartment right in the middle of Causeway Bay, just a 5 minutes walk from the Times Square and Lee Garden.

We set off to our second destination of the day which is Sai Kung (West Province in Cantonese). This town is near the seaside, therefore famous for their seafood. About an hour journey from our apartment, we took the MTR and this public light bus (Bus No. 1A) which only carries 16 passengers. And trust me this light bus is very fast and it feels like a roller coaster ride up and down the hills. It reaches the speed of 80 km/hr. You only need to pay HK$8.40 or you can tap your fare using the Octopus Card. I got mine at the Airport for HK$150 with a stored value of HK$100

Arrived in Sai Kung and we quickly head to a seafood restaurant. Ordered and with 7 dishes and desserts which cost HK$1443 thats about SG$40 per person for 7 different types of seafood dish. Cheap isn't it?

Headed back to apartment and had a good night sleep.

DAY 2:

My morning was greeted by rude neighbours as they were chatting loudly at 7am and it disturb me and a few of my other friends.

Got up and I'm all ready by 9am. So I decided to walk around Causeway Bay first while waiting for the rest to be ready by our planned time - 10am. Walked from Leighton Street all the way to Henessy Street with a cup of tall Vanilla Latte to keep myself warm in this cold morning. Well, having a Starbucks directly below your apartment is good isn't it?

Once done, all of us wanted to have this famous milk pudding for brunch. However once we reached the place, it only open at noon. So we look around for other things to eat. We found this restaurant which sells good breakfast just opposite The milk pudding shop.

I had this set B breakfast set which comprises of Satay Beef with Instant Noodles, Scrambled Eggs, Crispy Bun and Coffee/Tea. All for HK$32 (SG$5). Cheap.

After this heavy breakfast, we set for Tom Lee Music Store nearby. However, what I wanted is kind of limited there and the design is not really nice. Its a violin shoulder rest anyway.

Once done, I left the group. We promise to meet up back at the apartment by 6pm.  Went back to the apartment (nearby only) for wifi to look out for address. Save addresses and then I depart for Tung Chung, where the factory outlets are.

Once I reached City Gate, I realised something, I forgot my Masters Card which is in my Singapore wallet! Therefore I have to shop with whatever cash I have left. And that is HK$ 1020 (SG$175). Bought a Timberland shoes and Puma running shorts and I'm left with HK$ 300 (SG$51). I felt so stupid.
Have to go back to the apartment just to collect my card. I've decided not to join the rest for dinner and shall complete my shopping by tonight since they wanted to go Lamma Island tomorrow.

Once back to Apartment, saw the MARCOMM just finished with their meeting. Told one of them what actually happen and that I'm not joining for dinner.

MTR-ed to Tsim Tsha Sui and straight I went to Tom Lee Music Store. Spend close to 2 hours exploring this building. Its bigger and have more choices of instruments, books and accessories compared to the ones at Causeway Bay. Bought my violin shoulder rest and more exercise books for my theory exam in March because its generally cheaper here.

Went to eat Phad Thai with Iced Lemon Tea at this Thai Restaurant nearby. Apparently the person who took my order is so cute and we kept on having eye contact. Can't tell if the person is chinese or thai. Maybe mixed. Haha.

Head to Fa Yuen Street, Mongkok - the shoe haven - to look for a shoe for my nephew. Its an advanced birthday present for him. He wanted a Nike Roshe. But Nike Roshe is too expansive. I decided to buy for him Nike Air instead. And bought myself a running shoe also. New Balance. Somehow its more comfortable than the one I have and its cheap. Shall try tomorrow morning. Spend about 2 hours looking for his shoes and being the indecisive me, its difficult for me to choose the design that suit him because most of the designs are the ones that I'd prefer.

Enough with shoes, I decide to head back to Causeway Bay to put my stuffs in the apartment and decide to rest for the night & wait for everyone to come back.

Once I reached apartment, everyone was back. So we chatted, planned and decided to head to Lamma Island tomorrow

DAY 3:

Woke up earlier to run today. Planned my route towards Hong Kong Park and its only 3km!
Decided to run again this time with jacket. Managed to run 2.5km and trust me you wouldnt want to run at this temperature. Its effing cold and I my brain is about to explode that I decided to stop and cab back - I brought HK$100 with me.

Went to this Dim Sum restaurant nearby for breakfast. Learnt something that after pouring or being served chinese tea, we have to knock the table using two fingers bent to thank the person who's pouring.

Then we headed to Central Pier by MTR to Central Station to take a ferry to Lamma Island. We can use the Octopus card or by paying HK$21 to take the ferry at Central Pier 4. The rest of the pier will bring you else where for example Tsim Tsha Sui. There will be two ferry routes to the Lamma Island. Either through Sok Kwu Wan or Yung Shue Wan pier. We chose Yung Shue Wan since the ferry is saliling in 5 minutes.

In the ferry, I fell asleep even though the water was quite rough. Once we reach Yung Shue Wan Pier, the scenery of Lamma Island is really awe-inspiring. I didnt know that there's such place in Hong Kong. It's actually a village and there's a trail for tourist to explore from one pier to the other. The whole trail - or hike i should say - will take half a day.

We started from Yung Shue Wan Pier, full of cantonese speaking ang moh (locals) or english speaking chinese. Probably these people grew up here.

There're decent cafes as well. Like for example The Book Cafe, patrons can enjoy the books provided in the cafe, or thier own, plus enjoying delicacies the cafe have to offer. What a good idea isn't it?

We stopped this beancurd stall "Ah Puo Tau Huey" which means Grandma's Beancurd. Instead of sugar syrup, they used honey.

We continued the trail which forks to a steep slope to a wind turbine and another road to the Beach. This turbine is built to generate electricity for Lamma Island. Built in 1996, they also installed solar panels to generate electricity to the lamp posts nearby. Here you can get a good view of Hong Kong Island too.

Only four of us manage to climb that steep slope while the other 3 gave up halfway.

We came back down to the path and continue the trail to the beach. There the other three was having thier teabreak and so we joined them, to rest our legs as well. Had Iced honey lemon. We also ordered Fried Samosa and Spring Rolls to share around.

We continued shortly after and we stumbled upon a organically-grown herb farm named Herboland. Couldn't take photos there so we just walk around the farm trying to recognise some herb plants like eg Rosemary, Thyme, Basil, Lavender and many more.

Back to our track we head up all the way through the Family Trail which leads to the top of the hill. About 30minutes later we're at the hill top. Got myself a frozen pineapple there and after phototaking we're back on our track down to the other side of the hill (to Sok Kwu Wan pier).

Came across a few pavillions to take photo of the amazing view and also a grotto (a cave-like place) which named Kamikaze Grottos. This grotto, which was dug by the Japanese during the Japanese Occupation, having a plan to hide some speedboats for surprise attacks on the Allies' warships but the war was over before the grotto is completed.

Continued to Sok Kwu Pier which is 15 minutes away from the grotto. And after much walking up and down, we've reached and on our way back to Central Pier.

Back at Central, we went to this famous chicken and goose rice stall to have dinner. Cross over we found this shop recommended by Xiang Hong to try thier egg tart at Tai Cheong Bakery. The egg tart just melt in your mouth and i finished it within 4 bites! Wanted to get one more but I decided to get sugar puff instead. This sugar puff tasted like you-tiao coated with sugar. That's all. But it's nice!

After that we split. Walked around Central and Sheung Wan and headed back to apartment as my legs started to feel the sore from the hike. On my way back, i bought stuffs like mask and shampoos at Sasa and Watsons to replenish my toiletries. Its cheap there.

Oh! I tried this dessert too. Hui Lau Shan. That's the name of the store! Its everywhere in Hong Kong. Their specialty is mango. I bought this drink with sago, coconut juice, mango juice and mango bits. Although I wanted Mango Pomelo Sago but it ran out of stock.

Pack and sleep!

DAY 4:

Went down to starbucks to get a cup of yogurt with muessli to have something before we checkout. Checked out apartment at 9.30am and we cabbed straight to Hong Kong MTR Station to in-town check in our luggage. This is very good for night flights like us and we don't want to carry our luggage around. This facilities and service is really good.

Mei and Janelle left us after that for their flight which is at 12pm! Then the five of us head to Jordon, Kowloon for breakfast. It's there that I've tried one of the best milk pudding ever. Its damn delicious.

We went to Tom Lee there, the one that I went to to get my shoulder rest. We walked from Jordan to Tsim Sha Tsui to kill time.

My friends thought me how to pronounce Tsim Sha Tsui which is Chim Sha Chui. Basically, replace Ts with Ch! Its quite of a tongue twister at first. After that I got the hang of it.

Reached and again I bought another music book for my practical exam - Bach: 6 Cello Suites arr for Solo Viola.

After that we split and promised to meet at SOGO (Causeway Bay) at 4.30pm. Having not much cash left (HK$180), Octopus card (HK$6.4) and realising that I've checked in my mastercard in my luggage, I've got nothing to shop with. So I decide to head to Tom Lee, bought a manuscript book, a music writing set for a total of HK$80 and head down to Causeway Bay.

With 3 hours to spare, I went to a Starbucks near SOGO and work on a random arrangement of "We wish you a merry christmas".

At 4.30pm, we meet up and walked around SOGO to do our last minute snacks shopping (not for me and Xiang Hong), and we head to airport for our flight back to Singapore!

A short and enjoyable trip to close the gap between me and the BHSO guys which I rarely talk to during Sunday practices.

On a short note, I'm missing Hong Kong weather right now.

6:37 am

Malacca, a city full of historical places, museums and buildings preserved up till now from the Dutch, Portugese and British rules. Not just buildings but also food from the Peranakan Baba here is delicious and the flavors are a mystery, not knowing how it taste until you actually try it for yourself!

Tried the Peranakan Nyonya food at this restaurant called Kocik Peranakan! Ordered Ayam Buah Keluak, Cincalok Omelette and Ngo Hiang. Tried Buah Keluak for the first time and we got to know that Buah Keluak originates from Indonesia and requires soaking for up to one week!

Peranakan Baba & Nyonya Musuem. We decided to take the guided tour which cost RM15 per pax. The guide, Emily, tried her best to guide us and explained the culture, the architecture of the building, the Peranakan processions, the ceremonies, the crockeries and many more, squeezing those info in just 45-60 minutes.

Honestly, I've learnt many things. Didn't know there're more chinese beliefs and superstitions that I learn from this Peranakan Museum itself.
I'll talk more about our Peranakan tour in my next post.

Had loads of street food from Cendol, Sweet Potato Balls, Malacca Kuehs and many more. Walked past this mosque and what interest me the most is the design of the mosque. With Victorian tiles, this mosque has a Sumatran influence - thus having 3 tiers of roofs just like the chinese temple. Also they have this 'watchtower' which have a design of the indian temple.

We managed to locate two mausoleums or makams which is Makam Hang Jebat and Makam Hang Kasturi. Both located at Jalan Hang Jebat and Jalan Hang Kasturi respectively.

The Stadthuys, a town hall built beside the Christ Church when the Dutch took over Malacca. When the British took over, it became a school and now it became a Museum of History and Etnography.

We went up the hill to St. Paul's Church. Its not really a church but more of a ruin. Initially that place is a chapel and as time goes by it transformed into a fortress and eventually it became what it is now a ruin, attracting many tourists.

We also went to the Istana Kesultanan Melaka. Over there, the number of sultans, the names of the different sultans, the events that took place got us confused but after we talked it out, it definitely gave us a clear idea of what actually happened during that point of time.

Learnt many different terms such as the differences between 'Lembing' and 'Tombak'. Tombak is a general term for spears and Lembing is a specific type of spear with a ridge that lines the centre of the metal piece.

All in all, there're more things we have yet to discover in Malacca due to shortage of time. In one word, I would put a label to Malacca is 'Historical'. Its an eye-opening journey where you'll learn many things. Things that you dont know, that you might have known or get it all wrong.

5:01pm

Jakarta is a city rich for its culture, food and textile. Somewhere you can go and enjoy many kinds of Indonesian food, food that you might not hear of, and indonesian food that has been circulating in many other countries as well, just that its more original here.

I ate alot when I'm here. Definitely the food here is awesome. Full of spice and it taste as original as it can be. For instance, Ayam Lele, or what they call it Ayam Penyet in Singapore and Malaysia, spiced fried chicken served with rice, cucumber, tempe (fermented beans), cabbage and not forgeting the thick awesome super spicy sambal! I fell in love with this dish sold in push carts all around Jakarta and this one I tried it from a push cart near my hotel.

Not forgetting apart from that, push cart sellers selling food such as Es Cendol, Es Cincau, Nasi Goreng Gila, Gudek, Ketoprak, Gado-Gado, Aneka Gorengan and many more.

The food prices here are very cheap and you can get two good meals at merely RP 50000 (SGD$5).

Food aside. The traffic in Jakarta is massive. Everyone is busy rushing here and there with either motorcycles or cars. The roads are adequately divided and the drivers, well most of it, are the impatient bunch, where they will just cut into any vehicles without giving signals and just making additional lanes to the already unclear ones. This makes the road a lot more congested. Sellers, selling stuffs be it food, magazines, newspapers, posters, make use of the bad traffic to make people buy their goods, making purchases through the windows of the car.

What interest me the most is the dedicated 'Busway' where there will be no other vehicles other than buses moves in that lane. Though it might seems simple as that, yet there will always be some disobedient drivers that will make use of the lane to cut across or overtake. Another interesting about the traffic here is that most of the drivers dont obey the traffic rules at all. Well, partially. They stopped at red light, and move when there's noone or no cars crossing the road junction. That is how bad they are. They dont just beat the red light, but they ignore the red light totally.

Crossing the road is another thing that I may find intriguing. You might find it hard to cross since all the cars themself don't give way to each other, neither the human traffic light plays an important role since the cars dont stop at all. Be brave, raise your hand and just cross. Yes they will horn their car (since its a norm) but they will stop for you.

Apart from buses, motorcycles or cars, taxis are a common sight in Jakarta. Not just a normal taxi in a form of a car, but taxi in a form of a motorcycle. Yes. A two-wheeled motorcycle or what they call it here "Ojek". Meant for a single customer as a pillion and the rider will transport you to your said destination. Another form of taxi here is a three-wheeled vehicle, some sort of a motorcycle with a seat at the back, which will transport at a maximum of 2 person. Not sure what it's called. No form of metering system for "Ojek" and three-wheeled vehicle so be careful when riding one.

There are many shopping malls in Jakarta. Old ones, new ones, big ones, small ones, but like Singapore, there isn't much differences between them.

You might wanna ask if there's such thing like a Bugis Junction or Petaling Street here in Jakarta? So far, I haven't see any. Maybe I didn't explore enough.

The weather here is horrendous. It's very very hot. Not a single raindrop since I reached here or any strong wind to cool the overall temperature of the city. So many would prefer to stay indoors as much as possible. You'll get sticky and all sweaty once you step outdoor.

Apart from that, Jakarta is a city full of history. They built lots of museums in Jakarta each with its own category to display its historical artefacts. Such example are the maritime musem, fine arts and ceramic museum, and even Musuem Wayang where they display different kind of wayang kulits and how it transform in time.

The reason I'm here because of a running event "Mandiri Jakarta Run". Participated in then10km run, I'm here to see the differences between the management in Indonesia compared to Singapore.

One for sure is that they use human as barricades. They have their reasons I suppose which I'm not really sure what. But I reckoned, its for easy access to human traffic (non participants) walking around that area. The isotonic drink. Initially after I tasted the ones given out water points, they sure tasted funny because I'm not sure what kind of isotonic drink they provided us with. But at the end, all runners received a bottle of the Isotonic drink. This blue bottled drink with different flavors. Fair enough the one I drank was Apple Guava flavor. After knowing what drink and flavor it was, It actually tasted good.

The run overall was an easy route. Not much turns and corners. Just one simple U-turn at a halfway mark of 5km! I'm pleased.

All in all, Jakarta is a nice place to visit. Maybe not alone for you can share and enjoy food with the company of friends. Because as for me, only the variety and delicious food that attracts me here. :)

To my dearest mum,

Your health is my utmost concern now. It has been deteriorating ever since you've been hospitalised last year and started using Insulin. Seeing your condition like this makes me feel so bad.

You refused to let the doctor know about your bowel syndrome. Do you know that contributes to your health issue? Do you know that because of your bowel issue, your diet is affected and resulted in too low of sugar in your blood?

When I reported to the doctor just now you went all angry at me for you don't want to see the specialist. But I insisted and already booked an appointment with the colorectal specialist in October.

I want you to know that I want you to recover. Do we can go to Jakarta in January without any worries. Please get well soon.

:(

4:10 pm

Oops. Sorry my dear website for not updating. Its been a while.

Let me see. How and where shall I start?

Work has been good. On the 14th July, I got confirmed in the company. I have already feel comfortable with the work environment. But the only thing that I'm afraid of is the Audits. I wonder when my first audit will be. I'm afraid that I can't answer the auditors' questions. That's all. All in all, work has been fine for me.

Licence. I've started my driving practical not long ago. Quite relieved that I've started it because if I keep on delaying, that's about it. My FTT will be down the drain.

Orchestras. Practices. Okay. Coping well with my schedule. Rush here and there. From work to practices to practicals. I'm so dead.

Holidays. Yeap! Looking forward for my Jakarta run! Especially the trip. That's what matters most. Not the run. But the trip tself!

Housing. I'm glad that HDB approved our loan. Let's see where this leads us to. I want to go back to where I belong. Yishun. That's where it is.

Lovelife? I'm unsure myself. We've been quarrelling alot lately. Somehow, I just want to be away from this relationship for the time being. If only you know me well, but now it seems that you still don't know me well enough yet. I just don't like a clingy relationship. Period.

Other than that, I guess things have been behaving well. Thank you dear Allah for this. :)
